Additional Information

Also known as 'Lella', ELLEN FRANCES DAVIDSON was the eldest child of Robert Ernest and Ruth Davidson.

Educated at Saint Hilda's School, she initially stayed at home after leaving school to help her mother and family. Lella enjoyed walking and was a member of the Otago Tramping Club. She enjoyed walking on and around the hills near Dunedin with club members or with her close friends Greta Stevenson and Alister Duthie. She became a keen mountaineer and was taught alpine climbing by guide Kurt Suter.

In 1934 Lella trained as a nurse at Otago Hospital and qualified 4 years later. Her kind and sypathetic nature, combined with good common sense, made her a successful nurse and after becoming a Sister she left New Zealand in February 1939, with another nurse, to travel around the world.

They reached England, just as war broke out in September 1939. Lella volunteered and joined the reserve of the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service.1

Sister ELLEN FRANCES 'Lella' DAVIDSON was posted to Normandy, France. She died on Christmas Day, Monday 25th December 1939, 3 days after contracting Influenza.
